No niche – What is a niche in the marketing world?

Hi, I’m Megan, the owner, founder, and jack of all trades of Dixon Digital Marketing Agency! Thanks for being here. I want to introduce myself here, and there’s more to follow on the website. I’d also like to preface this by saying my sense of humor is sarcastic, and I’m not super rude.

I own a social media management and marketing agency, and we have no specific specialty. That’s rare, my friends. No niche. We proudly offer services to all industries, and we look forward to the future trades we get to educate ourselves on while being given the chance to let their brand shine.

My marketing expertise does not come with a niche. Everybody says you need a niche to stand out, and I’m telling you, I can do anything under the sun – from startups to well-established businesses. I thrive in the challenge and chaos. I love to build up new brands and extend the reach of ones that already have a following. They all come with unique challenges and excitements.

What am I talking about? What is a niche in the marketing world?

Some niche industries include health and wellness, pet owners, gamers, travelers, homeowners, and restaurants/bars. To be completely honest, some niche markets are still untapped. Social media marketing is so new to society that there aren’t specific rules to follow (sometimes).

Simply put, niche marketing attracts a very specific segment of the audience by focusing on one brand, product, or service. A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focused. The market niche defines the product features that satisfy specific market needs, the price range, production quality, and the demographics it is intended to target.

What are the advantages of picking a specific niche?

Well, it’s undeniable that a marketing company specializing in (let’s say) restaurants or food services have more expertise than a marketing company that takes anyone on as a client.

When you manufacture a specialized product for a niche market, you act as a world expert in the field.  You are the best opinion for the right answers, you are the end game and end decision. You cannot be an expert in all categories!

Expertise is huge, and it’s a really big deal for a lot of companies hiring a voice for their brand. The good news is, there’s plenty of room for all of us here. There are PLENTYYYYYY of options for companies that are in dire need of some social media help.  There’s no stepping on toes here.

The decision to choose a company that specializes in your niche can also benefit you greatly.  This can attract more customers, educate competitors, and hold a skill set that will meet every one of their specific needs.

Now that I have you sold on niching down, what are the disadvantages? Or rather, what are the advantages of not picking a specific field?

To me, the answer is simple, and it aligns perfectly with my personality, so win win. I don’t like being told what to do.  I don’t like being told my work will suffer in one category if it’s shining in another. I don’t have any idea what field I would choose and that’s why I have business and marketing degrees. Ever changing. No one’s shoving you into a box.  You figure it out for yourself.

A professional answer would be that economically it lowers your unit costs from operating at a higher production volume.  It’s a LOT of work learning how to speak in the voice of a new business in a new industry every three months. I don’t risk over-dependence on a single product or market. My “eggs aren’t all in one basket,” if you will.

Some real disadvantages I will share are small market size, limited growth potential, low profit, and high competition. Entry-level marketing positions are the BANE of my existence. You have to sell yourself, your quality, your skill set truly, and your worth because the other guy is selling exactly how to advertise what they want to be advertised. And they have the numbers to prove how good they are at it.  Ah, good times.

Lastly, and I think this is true in all social media marketing platforms and careers, we are vulnerable to market changes. Yeah, all my eggs aren’t in one basket industry-wise, but what do we all do if social media platforms disappear, change, go on hiatus? There is a lot of unknowns in the social media world, and that has the potential to end any and all of our social media marketing careers.

There is always print marketing to return to – we will shift and shine with what we are given in this world, as we always do. Thanks for making it this far! Thanks for the support. If you know anyone in any industry looking for a good-a$$ social media revamp, send them this blog! We are forever grateful.

Until next time,  MK
